| What is the meaning of Independence Day? |
|
I was a bit confused this morning when I was asked me to write an article on the Independence Day that all of us will celebrate in the next couple of days. As a person who was born more than 30 years after Sukarno-Hatta declared our Independence from the Japanese, I questioned myself: what is the meaning of Independence Day? For many of us the 17 August is just one of the red-letters day in the calendar - a day on which one does not have to come to work. Most Asian countries had their independence after World War II. Vietnam had been recognised its independence in 1954. Malaysia had its independence on 31 August 1957 and Singapore on 9 August 1965. But look at their GDP per capita. In 2007 GDP per capita of Malaysia was US$14,000 and Singapore US$39,952.44. And ours? Indonesian GDP per capita in 2007 was only US$1,925 which was lower than Vietnam (US$3,100).
Do we care about this figure when we celebrate the 17 August every year? So often we forget what the intention of the remembrance of the Independence Day is. The meaning of the word and certainly the idea of independence is routinely ignored and often purged from the celebration. Let us take Independence Day as a day to think things through. What have we achieved this year? Is it better than last year? Do not we wish to have the same GDP per capita as Malaysia? Or Singapore? Or higher than Vietnam? With the celebration of the Independence Day this year, let us retrospect to what we have achieved both personally and within the Khrisna group - and how to make it better. Without being chauvinists, let us work hard in everything we do - and be the best people in Asia! |
